Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Motorized Kayak?
Simply put, we mount a lightweight trolling motor on every one of our kayaks. These motors are designed for kayaks and canoes, are battery operated and environmentally sound with no gas or oil drips, no toxic fumes and no noise pollution. They are steered with an easy to use tiller system.

All customers are thoroughly trained on the safe operation of these motorized kayaks, and all safety rules are explained and demonstrated. Guides are nearby throughout your tour to assist in any way.
What kind of kayaks do you have?
Motorized Kayak Adventures has a variety of kayaks that we will match to you to fit your needs. We have sit-on-tops, sit insides, and tandems. If you have a request, please let us know when you make a reservation. Even with the motor attached, our motorized kayaks have a draft of only 11 inches.
Do I need any previous kayaking experience?
No experience needed. Most of our customers are new to the motorized kayak phenomenon. Children as young as 8, and those with physical limitations and seniors of all ages have successfully operated our kayaks. Therefore, we go to great lengths to ensure the safety of our customers during the tours as well as provide an educational orientation prior to every tour. You will be instructed on how to use the equipment in a safe and proper manner. Our trips are for everyone.
You don't have to be a marathon paddler to enjoy our trips. All you do is watch, listen, relax and steer!

The best thing about a Motorized Kayak Tour is that it is relaxing, it requires little effort and it allows you to fully enjoy the sights, sounds and adventure that make this experience one that you will long remember. Being in good physical condition will enhance your experience, but it is not required. We specialize in active seniors as well as physically challenged. We do ask that you come with an open mind and the willingness to be flexible if we encounter the unexpected.
Are tour groups kept small?
We try to keep our group sizes down with usually no more than 8 to 10 guest per tour, so that every person receives the best from our interpretive guides. We want our customers to ask questions and receive assistance with their individual needs. Our Sunset and Moonlight Tours trips tend to be large on the weekends. We usually divide these trips into smaller groups to insure everyone's safety and enjoyment.
Will I get wet?
Sometimes. Expect to get your feet wet entering and exiting the kayak and occassionally water may enter the sitting area. So, wear water shoes or tennis shoes and clothing suitable for being around water. And, swimming except in cooler weather is included on our Mangrove Jungle Tour.
What is the Speed of a Motorized Kayak?
Your Motorized Kayak can move quite briskly, at about 2-4 mph. Our kayaks go about as fast as the average paddler can paddle for any extended period of time. The leading brand pedal powered kayaks simply cannot keep up. For many people, 2-4 mph in a kayak seems much faster than it sounds because you are sitting so close to the water, yet it is so easy to control with our on/off switch and our tiller steering.
Motorized Kayak tracking
Our motorized kayaks have a much more efficient hull design that cuts through the water smoothly for a nice relaxing ride. They track very well (stays straight on course without weaving, veering or slipping and sliding to the left and right).
Will I be comfortable?
Each Motorized Kayak is supplied with padded seats and excellent width and leg room. We select the most stable and comfortable kayaks on the market. Entering and exiting the kayak can be done from the side, like sitting in a chair. We even provide extra padding and support for the lower back, so you can lean back and relax. You can add your own cushions or beach towels if you wish.
Do you have Steering Control?
Your kayak offers convenient and adjustable level tiller style steering right at your fingertips without having to reach behind your back as with rear tiller steering type arrangements. Pull it forward, and the craft will go to right, push it back, and the craft will go left.
What is your Motor?
The lightweight 30 LB thrust trolling motor offers a convenient one speed on/off control box. A 30 LB thrust motor is the maximum size motor that we recommend for virtually any lightweight kayak size / style boat. This is because larger motors typically only create a larger wake behind the boat but offer little if any additional top end speed. With larger thrust motors, you end up burning up more battery capacity much quicker without any noticeable gain. Our propeller pitch is engineered for small vessels like a kayak or canoe.
Where do your Tours go?
We specialize in the Indian River Lagoon and the St. Lucie River estuaries. All of our tours rarely enter into water that is more than waist deep, or 2-3 feet deep. The tours can go where regular motor boats cannot. That is what is so unique about our tours that allow you to experience nature at a slow and even pace and with minimal disturbance of the wildlife. See tour information for a description of our tours.
How long is the Tour?
Our tours include some paddling, and we run at a mixture of speeds, stopping and going as necessary to view the wonderful environment. Our Motorized Kayaks can easily last all day on a single charge. Non-stop, our kayaks can run continuously for up to 2 to 3 hours. We always carry spare batteries to extend the run time if needed.
Battery & Charger
The boat has a covered compartment for the battery. It utilizes a standard 12 volt deep cycle marine battery. All our batteries and wiring are safe to the customer with fuse protection.
What if we see manatees or dolphins?
We will turn off our motors immediately upon sighting a pod of manatees or dolphins. We will let them come to us if they choose. Feeding or intentionally touching wildlife is prohibited.
